Have you ever heard of higher level protocol J1850?

A31) It is the main network used in US passenger cars today. Although they have all said they will be using CAN shortly (2002), it will be around for a long time. J1850 and ISO9141 (another network) are the only EPA approved Diagnostic networks. US Passenger cars are working on getting J2284 (a CAN-based network) approved.
J1850 has its own chipset. It is a serial data link. Speed is either 10.4 Kbps or 41.6Kbps.
